Festivals
Almost every weekend during the summer months and throughout the year, Hermann plays host to German festivals, the biggest of which are Maifest and Oktoberfest. Even those not interested in wine will enjoy a visit to Hermann for the festivities, which include traditional German dancing, bratwurst, beer and Maypole dancing.
Octoberfest is  held the first four weekends in October, is focused on celebrating the regionís German heritage.

Stone Hill Winery is now the third most awarded winery in America.
Missouri's Weinstrasse (German for wine road).

Grape growing and wine making in Hermann and the surrounding countryside have been ongoing since the arrival of the first German settlers in the early 1800s. Hermann has been in the forefront of the Missouri wine industry since 1837, a year after the town was founded. Today, there are seven award-winning wineries within a 15-mile radius of Hermann and more than 40 throughout the state. Early in 2005, the seven local wineries formed the Hermann Vintnersí Association. Together, they promote the Hermann Wine Trail and sponsor special events throughout the year.

Courthouse County Seat of Gasconade County - Hermann's Cathedral of Democracy
.
After an election on March 14, 1842, the county seat moved to Hermann.  This site, high on a bluff above the Missouri River, is one of few courthouse sites that takes advantage of a natural vista. The present courthouse building, a gift to the county from a local Hermann merchant, Charles D. Eitzen, was built 1896-1898 and is probably the only privately gifted courthouse in the United States..

Historic courthouses are more than architecturally grand buildings and old government offices.
They're physical, tangible links to community and state heritage

Music
Music has been part of the Hermann way of life ever since the first Germans settled here in 1837.  The Clara Eitmann Messmer Amphitheater on Gutenburg Street in downtown Hermann will be open to the public for concerts throughout the summer.  The schedule includes all three summer performances by the Hermann Municipal Band which is a tax based public band dating back to Hermann's beginnings.

National Register of Historic Places
With more than 110 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Hermann has been dedicated to preserving its heritage, and continues to do so, through its restoration projects and museum expansions.  Museums tell the story of a community's past.  They are family friendly and can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages.  Hermann has several museums that add to the town's appeal as a tourist destination.

German Traditions
When you visit, let your imagination wander,  and you may think you're in a village on the Rhine. Hermann has been celebrating Maifest since the early 1870s, when the event was an end-of-school picnic. Children dressed up in their Sunday best to march behind the Municipal Band to the city park, where school board members passed out knackwurst and pink lemonade.

Katy Trail
Travelers looking for a truly unique experience can tour Missouri's wine country by bicycle-a classic wine-connoisseur's dream. Wine enthusiasts can venture off the beaten path and pedal the ambling trails of the Katy Trail State Park, which weaves through the Weinstrasse region. The journey along the 250-mile long trail, the longest rails-to-trails project in the country, encourages travelers to admire wide-open spaces swept with wildflowers and views of towering bluffs, rolling hills and glistening rivers.

Enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Katy Trail year round. Each season brings new life to the trail. It is a haven for wildlife and birds, and sandstone and limestone bluffs, wetlands, rolling fields, and densely wooded areas provide exciting views at every turn along the trail.  You can rent bikes at Ride, Rest & Go in Hermann.

Whether you like elegant gourmet dining in a Victorian Mansion or the best German Food in America - and everything in between - Hermann will fill your bill for great restaurant experiences. We have more than 10 restaurants to choose from, and you'll want to sample several. From classic German to great Mexican to fine Continental, Hermann is a gustatory delight.
