overlooking the Missouri River is officially recognized
as America's First
Wine District. Today, Missouri wineries along the
Missouri River are receiving considerable attention for wining
national and international wine competitions. In addition to

entertainment. Bikers and hikers can take in the scenery
along the the Katy Trail, a former railroad right-or-way converted

Family farm wineries were the backbone of the early Missouri wine
industry. In 1839, John Henry Puchta brought his growing family and
his wine making skills from his native Bavaria to the lush Frene
Valley near Hermann. The family planted vineyards then built a home
and a traditional arched cellar with the fine native stone. Until
prohibition destroyed the industry, the Puchta Winery was
recognized for its quality wines. In 1988, Tim Puchta moved into
the old family home to begin replanting the vineyards and restoring
the original building. The sixth generation of Puchtas invite you
to explore their authentic Farm Winery nestled in the hills along
Frene Creek just two miles from Hermann, west on Highway 100. Tour
the native stone wine cellar and taste their medal winning wines.
View the original stone-wheeled grape crusher and wine press on
display, along with other antique winemaking equipment. Then relax
under the Pecan, Walnut and Buckeye trees with your favorite wine

Bias is the first in Missouri, second in the nation, to operate as
a Winery and Microbrewery combined. Bias is in the
second Missouri Apellation Region known as "Hermann Viticultural
area." The Bias Winery owners say "Come and visit us.

question. We started our winery in 1980. We had a
five acre Catawba vineyard. Since, we have expanded
with four varieties of French hybrids, Chambourcin, DeChaunas,
Seyval and Vidal. Our grapes are all hand picked mid-August
to mid-September. We strive to make fresh, clean tasting
wine." Bias is a small family-owned winery with a limited
production. Their wines are produced from their own
vineyards, located 600 ft. from the winery. This allow them
to harvest and promptly crush the grapes the moment they reach
their peak of ripeness. The pressing, fermentation, aging and
bottling are all performed at the winery on the estate as
well.

The winery is located about 10 miles east of Hermann. Heading
east from Hermann on Highway 100, turn right onto Grant Lane.
The winery is less than a mile from the highway.

Nick Bommarito and his children established their 10 acres of vines
in 1996 and opened the winery in 2000. Wine production is between
1000 & 1500 gallons annually. Two silver medals were
awarded for the 2001 Norton and 2003 Vignoles from only five estate
wines produced by the winery. Bommarito's wine list featured
French Oak Norton, St. Vincent, Almond Tree Red, Vignoles, and
Almond Tree Blush. All are available to sample and purchase
at the tasting room. Tours of vineyards and cellar are
available. Picnicking on the grounds is encouraged. The
tasting room seats approximately 30 people and its wood burning
fireplace creates a cozy atmosphere during the winter
months.

Guether Heeb, owner of Phoenix Winery, established the winery in
2000. He is makeing wine from nine French hybrid grape varieties he
grows on 10 acres. The driveway leading to the tasting room
meanders through the vineyards.Guenther was born and raised at 200
year old winery along the Rhine River in Germany. Guenther
describes his as a small, boutique winery where he tries to
maintain the German style of wine making. All 2000 gallons of
Phoenix wines are sold at the winery. Along with winery,
Guenther operates the Edelweiss Dining Club, a private membership
only eating club on the premises.

Winery. Robller is located at the east end of the town of New
Haven, MO, two blocks south of Highway 100. It's common to
find a kite in the sky, a dog sunning on the hillside and the
winemaker pouring the day's selections. The winery has a
secluded location surrounded by vineyard; a great getaway
destination. From late September throughout October the
winery hosts live music to entertain visitors. In addition to
hand-crafted Missouri wines, Robller offers cheese, locally made
sausages, and fresh baked bread for picnics. Bar-B-Que is
available during festivals and live music days. Non-alcoholic
beverages are also available. The deck, terraces and a

Stone Hill is Missouri's oldest and most-awarded winery.The winery
is listed on the National Historic Register. Visitors are

tour. A large pavilion on the property is open during many
community festivals, as well as for events sponsored by the
winery. It may be rented for wedding receptions, meetings and
private parties. The former carriage house is home to the
Vintage Restaurant, which open daily at 11am for lunch and

3 festivals - Redbud Fest in April, Heritage Fest in June, and
Harvest Home Fest in September - as well as warm weather concerts
featuring musicians who play a wide variety of music including
bluegrass, jazz, folk, blues and even some Cajun. Winter events
include a hayride, a Nouveau dinner and Christmas gatherings. Swiss
Meat Company sausages and cheeses are available for sale anytime,

Tin Mill Brewery (now
open)
Owners Don & Jeanne Gosen & Ellen Dierberg Schepman plan
for a large brewery complex in downtown Hermann housed in the
former MFA feed store on Guttenberg. This is where they
will make the majority of the brewery's German beers. These
will include a Light Pilsner, Full Bodied Lager, Dopplebock and
Octoberfest beer. All of the raw materials for theses beers
will be imported from Germany. "Our beers will all be made in
the traditional German brewing method using only lager yeast," said
Gosen. "This gives the beer a drier more crisp flavor."
There will be a beer garden in the back of the building and also
across the street from the brewery. The Tin Mill Brewery will be
capable of producing over 2000 barrels a year and will include a
kegging and bottling line. The next phase of the brewery
project will include the grain elevator on First St next to the red
caboose. The grain elevator will become a full service
restaurant and brewpub. A separate brew system will be
installed in this facility and will produce more of our seasonal
and specialty beers," said Gosen. He said one example of this
is an oatmeal stout that is aged in used Jack Daniels barrels for 6
months. The Tin Mill will also make a beer with ingredients
grown on the new living history farm under construction at the
former Kallmeyer farm. |
